Translating Melvin is a great idea by Gloria Joven & Rubén Martínez. They called us to explain this freaking amazing project that consists on translating the electrophysiology of a common fern into Twitts.
For that purpose we made an Arduino + Openframeworks based installation to take out the values from a series of sensors distributed around the plant and communicate them with the Flash Based client via sockets, using an ALICE bot implementation with custom AIML sets brains to create the personality of our little fern.
The result is a chat based multi-mood artificial intelligence linked with a physical installation that streams via webcam 24h. This device interacts via Twitter with everyone that uses the #translatingmelvin hashtag.
